The Mama Baker Kazibwe Award for The Best Female Team

The Mama Baker Kazibwe Award for The Best Female Team

In a sport often overshadowed by its male counterparts, there stands a towering figure who shattered norms and redefined what it meant to support, lead, and build women’s football in Uganda: Mama Baker Kazibwe.

A name deeply rooted in the soul of Ugandan football, she wasn’t just a cheerleader for Express FC and the Uganda Cranes; she was the heartbeat of women’s football development in the 1990s. With relentless spirit and passion, Mama Baker inspired pioneers like Oliver Mbekeka and Harriet Kayonjo, and co-founded the Kampala Women Football Club, Uganda’s first women’s football team. Alongside Winnie Nakafeero and Coach Paul Ssali, she planted the seeds of a legacy that has blossomed into the current powerhouse clubs we celebrate today. Her loyalty even in the face of political persecution including wrongful detention under Idi Amin’s regime only amplified her legendary status.

In her honor, the Mama Baker Kazibwe Award for the Best Female’s Team seeks to recognize
the club that has embodied excellence, resilience, and progress in the beautiful game just as Mama Baker did.
