Championing Recognition for Every Stakeholder in Ugandan Football.

In a nation where football sparks passion in every community, recognizing those who dedicate their lives to the sport—both on and off the pitch—is a noble pursuit. At the forefront of this mission stands Kimbowa Richard, the visionary team leader behind the Local Football Appreciation Awards, an initiative devoted to honouring and celebrating local football heroes. Born and raised in a sports-loving family in Katende, Kimbowa Richard’s life has been intertwined with the rhythm of the beautiful game from an early age.

His father, Mr. Posiano Lumenye, holds the distinction of being one of Uganda’s fast football referees, narrowly missed out on being handed a FIFA badge while his mother, an exceptional goalkeeper, earned admiration for her remarkable skills between the posts. With such a legacy, it was inevitable that Kimbowa would carve his own path in football.

Kimbowa began as a youth player and, remarkably, completed his first coaching course while still in Senior Two—a rare feat that saw him mentoring peers before many had mastered the game’s rules. His passion led him to diverse roles, including team doctor for Busiru Saza and Wakiso United, and he later earned a goalkeeping license while with Wakiso United.

A defining moment came in 2013 during a youth tournament when a call by FUFA referee Aisha perplexed him. What appeared to be a wrong call by the referee turned out to be, in fact, a legitimate decision—a revelation that shifted Kimbowa’s perspective and fueled his desire to deeply understand the game. He recalls, “after a free-kick was given, the opposing team had a quick start to the free-kick and actually scored against my team I was supporting”. That March, he enrolled in referee training and never looked back.

For a decade, Kimbowa officiated at various FUFA levels, bringing fairness, insight, and enthusiasm to every match. In November 2023, he chose to retire—not from exhaustion, but out of respect for the sport and a commitment to make way for younger, vibrant referees.
Yet, one issue persistently troubled him: the lack of recognition for football’s unsung contributors. While players and at times coaches reaped awards and applause, referees, medics, groundsmen, stadium announcers, administrators, and volunteers—the backbone of the game—remained overlooked. This gap inspired Kimbowa to launch the Local Football Appreciation Awards, an initiative dedicated to honouring and celebrating local football heroes at the grassroots level.

Through these awards, Kimbowa through his Sportsmetrics; a football data collection and management company in partnership with a branding and marketing consultancy; Leero Sports together with DailySport Africa aim to foster a culture of gratitude, motivation, and unity, ensuring that every stakeholder, from referees to team medics, receives the recognition they deserve. This vision is to transform how communities value their football heroes, shining a light on those who keep the sport thriving.

With the Local Football Appreciation Awards, a powerful precedent is being set not only for Uganda but potentially for all of Africa, in honouring and celebrating local football heroes who make the beautiful game possible.
